My grandmother, Jane Lamkin Brent, influenced me in
ways I am still discovering. She passed her interests in
literature, history and photography to me as well as her
keen observations of people. I remember, when I was a
child, we would watch people for what seemed liked
hours. She would point out particular people and note
something unique about them; the way they walked, the
way they held their head, the way they swung their
arms. She gave me a deep appreciation for the subtle
beauty in singular moments and the telling personality
inherent in gestures and expressions. She taught me
how to look at the world.
These are her photographs of family, friends and
neighbors in her world, from her time. She always had a
camera with her on walks into town and she loved to
photograph everyone she came across.
